How To Properly Hang Drapes
The way you hang drapes has a dramatic impact on a room. They can make windows appear larger, ceilings taller, and really add to the aesthetic of a room. One of the first things I notice in someone’s home is if their drapes are hung correctly. Here’s a quick lesson on how to hang drapes like a designer.

Drapes rule of thumb
Drapes should be hung to the ceiling and 10-15” out on each side of the window. The drapes should frame the window, not cover. Covering the window makes the window appear smaller.
Here is an example of properly hung drapes. They go up to the ceiling, out on each side of the window, and just touch the floor.
And here’s an example of what NOT to do. The rod sits just above the window and ends right at the side of each window. This home has lost 2 windows.
Exceptions:
Sometimes you may not have enough space to go out 10-15”. If you don’t, go out as far as you comfortably can. If you’re really lacking in space beside the window then you should consider shades instead.
