interior vs exterior mount shades

Knowing whether to choose an interior or an exterior mount shade can be frustrating. Not all windows or homes are created equally. It’s important to choose the right one for YOU and your home. So, let’s talk about when you should use an exterior mount vs interior mount.

When to do interior Mount

Interior mount is mounting the shade inside the window frame. It should be just slightly smaller than the frame.

You should select interior mount if:

  1. You are layering with drapes- the shade won’t catch the drapes when you’re opening and closing them.

  2. You have window trim you want to show

  3. You want a more modern, minimalistic look

The downside of interior mount shades is that the shade obstructs part of your view. You also have be precise when measuring for your shade- especially if you’re ordering a custom fit.

When to do exterior mount

Exterior mount is mounting the shade to the wall above the window so that when it is lowered it covers the window and windows’s edges. The shade should be at least 3” wider than the window- you can go wider for more light coverage.

You should select exterior mount if:

  1. You want your window to appear larger

  2. You need more coverage and light blocking

  3. You have no window trim

  4. You have ugly or damaged window trim you want to hide

  5. Your windows aren’t deep enough for an interior mount

Exterior mounts cover less window when open so you do have more of a view. But, as stated above, exterior mount shades will catch drapes and don’t have as much of a “clean” look.

Above is an example of my kitchen. When I had upper cabinets up I went with an interior mount because it didn’t have much space. After removing my cabinets I switched to an exterior mount. My window doesn’t have trim and I want the window to appear larger since I now have so much open space.

Shades can add a more elevated look than blinds when done correctly. And we have so many options: wooden, fabric, cordless, black out, etc. You can have them custom made of buy them off the shelf. So if you’re considering shades hopefully this guide will help. If you’re still unsure if you need to do interior or exterior mount you can work with me.
