TIPS FOR STYLING A BOOKSHELF
I’m a sucker for a bookshelf. The more shelving the better. It's an opportunity to create multiple vignettes which is one of my favorite things to do. Creating visual interest doesn't have to be complicated. Here are a few tips to help you style your bookshelf.
Create Layers
Choose items that have a range of height. One way to create height is by stacking things. This creates visual interest and layers. My favorite thing to stack: books. I like to stack books on their side to use as a base for other items or just to change their visual interest. Wooden pedal stools, trays, and boxes are all a great way to add height and layers.
Add Texture
Add different textures. Mixing materials like wood, metals, plants, rattan, etc. create visual interest. You want warm and cool, soft and hard features. Mix it up. It adds more depth and appeal.
Use Unique Items
This is your opportunity to add your personality in your bookshelf. Add unique items that are a reflection of you. Maybe you travel often- add your souvenirs. Maybe you love birds- add bird stuff! This makes your shelves feel curated rather than you went to Target and found some things. Nothing against Target decor, we all love it, but it’s not making your bookshelf special. My favorite way to find unique items is thrifting.
Balance the weight
Balancing is something you have to play around with. You want the weight, colors, and textures to feel even. If it doesn’t feel even then play around with your items and try them in different places. Uneven styling can ruin a bookshelf.
use small groupings
Grouping items has a different impact than placing items on their own. Suddenly you have a vignette. What you surround an object with can change its impact. Play around with mixing items and see what groupings compliment each other.
Make them useful
Bookshelves can store more than books and knickknacks. Some storage can be pretty and useful, like storing candlesticks in a bowl or tray, and some storage can hide things you don’t want seen. Baskets and bins are a great way to add hidden storage.
